Choirs
Holy
Communion Parish Choir
The Parish Choir
is open to all who wish to sing and share their talents in our parish
music ministry. The largest choral ensemble at Church of the Holy
Communion, this choir regularly sings for the 9 a.m. service on
Sundays, offering the widest variety of choral literature from the
great classics to spirituals. The Parish Choir is comprised of adult
and high school youth singers of all abilities and is augmented
by staff singers. New members are encouraged and always welcomed.
Rehearsals:
Wednesdays 6:30 - 8:00 p.m., Choir Room (Room 304)
Contact: David Ouzts.
Holy
Communion Motet Choir
Comprised
of professional singers and auditioned volunteers, The Motet Choir
specializes in challenging choral literature of all styles of sacred
music. Newcomers are always welcome, but a simple audition appointment
is requested of all new members. The Motet Choir regularly sings
for the 11:15 a.m. Sunday service and for other special services
and concerts throughout the season.
Rehearsals: Wednesdays
8:00 9:00 p.m., Choir Room (Room 304)

Taizé Schola
In preparation for our Taizé Eucharist services, held on alternate
Sunday evenings, a small group of singers gather at 4:30 p.m.
to rehearse and prepare the Taizé chants and songs. Music in
the Taizé tradition is meditative and intentionally simplistic,
giving the worshipper the opportunity to be completely
open to the Spirit while singing. Our Taizé Schola is a perfect
opportunity for singers who cannot commit to a weekday
rehearsal time; just show up on Taizé Sundays and sing!
Rehearsals:
1st and 3rd Sundays, 4:30 – 5:15 p.m., Church

Taizé & Celtic Music
Our popular Sunday evening services feature a wide
variety of music from the Taizé, Celtic, and Appalachian
folk traditions. Chant-like songs from the Taizé monastic
tradition, writt en for congregational singing, are augmented
by solo cantors with instrumentalists playing beautiful
countermelodies. Celtic music has a rhythmic vitality and
plaintive melodic quality that touches the soul, while the
Appalachian American tunes call us to be centered and
rooted in the faith. All of these styles are accompanied by
instrumentalists playing such instruments as the flute,
harp, guitar, oboe, cello, Irish whistle, hammered dulcimer,
drums and other rhythm instruments. Coupled with the
candlelight sett ing, religious symbols, and silence, Sunday
evening worshippers are transported to a place where God’s“still, small voice” can be felt and heard.

Holy Communion Ringers
Holy
Communion Ringers is our new handbell choir for adults and teens.
Handbell ringing is a joyful, active way to provide beautiful music
for worship. The ringers play a three-octave set of Schulmerich
English handbells given to the parish by Harwell and Faye Allen.
Some basic music-reading ability is helpful for membership.
Rehearsals:
Tuesdays, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m., Choir Room (Room 304)

Guest Instrumentalists
For
various services throughout the year, especially on Feast Days,
guest instrumentalists are featured at Holy Communion – brass
and string ensembles with timpani, as well as solo fl utists, trumpeters,
oboists, and others. These instrumentalists oft en accompany choral
anthems as well as
augment the organ for congregational hymns and service music. Look
for special instrumental off erings on Rally Day, Christmas Eve
with Daniel Pinkham’s Christmas Cantata, and Easter Day.

& Girls Choir (grades 3 & up of unchanged voices)
The
Boys and Girls Choir, for unchanged treble voices in third grade
and up, sings regularly for the 9 a.m. service September through
May. The choir follows the training scheme of The Royal School of
Church Music, in which boys and girls learn music reading, sight-singing,
good vocal production and Christian education. The choristers are
rewarded with medals and colored ribbons, indicating the skill level
attained. Food, parties and trips are also important parts of the
choir experience.
Rehearsals:
Wednesdays 5:00 6:00p.m., Room 304

Nicholas Choir (1st & 2nd grades)

giving children in fi rst and second grade their first look at what
it means to serve their church while learning the basics about music
and group singing. Singing on Sunday mornings every four to six
weeks, and at other special occasions, also reinforces their knowledge
of the seasons of the church year. By the end of their experience
in the St. Nicholas Choir, children will be able to earn their cotta
and move into the Boys and Girls Choir.
