Orientation (offered in early September)

Listening Skills
(Offered in the fall)

Do you want to engage people with more compassion? Do you want to communicate with more comfort? Do you want to relate to others with more competence? Participants in this four-week class will learn specific, helpful skills through a combination of readings and exercises. It is strongly recommended for all lay ministers and leaders who visit or have regular contact with church members – and for anyone who simply wants to be a more effective listener. Led by Tom Momberg.

At the sessions we will consider:

  1. Why does Church of the Holy Communion need a trained pastoral care team?
  2. What is pastoral care? What is it not (counseling, spiritual direction, psychotherapy)?
  3. How can I be a better listener? A more confident and sensitive visitor?
  4. What are the special care needs/issues of various groups (widows, homebound, elderly, chronically or terminally ill)?
  5. What kinds of things do I say or do when I visit? What do I not say or do when I visit?
  6. What do I do with the information I receive from the people I visit?
  7. What is the appropriate use of touch in offering care to others?
  8. How can I best manage the thoughts and feelings a visit might stir up in me?
  9. What are the spiritual and other resources available to pastoral caregivers?

Lover of Souls, we bless your Holy Name for all who are called to mediate your grace to those who are sick or infirm. Sustain them by your Holy Spirit, that they may bring your loving-kindness to those in pain, fear or confusion; that in bearing one another’s burdens they may follow the example of our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
