CHC officially adopted the nearby school in late 2004
and the list of parishioners spending a little time their each week
grew slowly but surely.
The visits are rarely long but they have had a huge
impact. Shady Grove school counselor Pat Fielder says that caring
adults dropping by each week, no matter what they do with the kids,
has a noticeable impact.
Its amazing.
It makes so much of a difference for them to see the consistency, the courtesy,
Pat said. All of the things that we need our children to see other people
doing so they can learn to do them themselves. In addition
to the things volunteers did this year one-on-one tutoring, after-school
clubs and the like Pat would like to see volunteers from the church help
to organize a field day next year.
Shady Grove principal Patricia Driscoll said the lasagna
dinner CHC volunteers hosted in April 2005 was important because
it provided a way for the larger school community to come together.
It
was absolutely fantastic, she said. It was a real family time and
that was the key. CHC volunteers shone at the school
week in and week out, but two really stood out, Patricia said. Jeanne
Bolen, bless her heart, she said. She needs a gold star. Jeanne
spent many days at the school working with kindergarteners and even called the
principal on a day she couldnt make it to say she would make up the time. Just
like my teachers do, Patricia said. Things like that go a long way
with us. Bryson Schaefer and her after-school book club
made a big impression on kids and teachers, as well. Those
little girls just loved it, Patricia said. They were so excited to
be with her every week. Its been wonderful. Hopefully, well be able
to do more of that.
All of the faculty and staff at the school are looking
for the relationship with the church to continue to grow. And theres
a simple way you can help to make that happen. Volunteer!

Tutoring Needs Shady Grove
Elementary School
More than half the students at Shady Grove Elementary,
our newly adopted school, qualify for free breakfasts and lunches.
Some do not speak English as their native language; others struggle
to do math or read. And all the students need the enriching opportunities
that a Chess Club, Theater Club, or Art Club can provide.
But to just know that there are adults outside of their community
who care about their future would be real boost for many.
Our Social Ministry needs a few people to volunteer to coordinate
various areas and tons of folks to help with the work. Here are
the areas we are trying to provide help with:
- Tutoring: Reading, Math, TCAP, English as a second language
for Spanish and Indian Students
- Developing and staffing after-school offerings (3:15-4:15
p.m.): Chess Club, Art Club, Theater Club and Book Club
- Help during lunch: Assist students, develop relationships
- Teaching manners: Men are needed to teach boys how to treat
girls properly
- Reading stories: In classrooms at various times
- Helping with the before-school room (7:30-8:15
a.m.)
