The Senate of the State of Tennessee
March 9, 2016
The Reverend Alexander H. Webb II (“Sandy”)
Rector, Church of the Holy Communion
come before you this morning as grateful people. Grateful for everything that
is beautiful – for the high mountains to our east and the rolling river to our
west, for the fertile soil that feeds us all, and for the faithful and resolute
people who have made Tennessee what it is.
also come before you as people in need of your blessing. In the days and weeks
ahead, this Senate will make important decisions about the education of our
children, about the treatment of our prisoners, and about the distribution of
our common wealth. In placing these weighty matters before us, you have set us
at tasks that will demand our best efforts, and you have promised to prosper
the work of our hands.
these challenging and divisive times, Lord, give us lips to speak the truth in
love, ears to listen while others speak, and hearts to ensure justice for those
who are unable to speak for themselves. Send your Holy Spirit to inspire and
embolden us, that we might have the wisdom to know your will and the courage to
do it. May this Senate’s actions be as beautiful as the Tennessee that you have
entrusted to its care.
of this we ask in the Name of the God in whom all things are possible, the God
who will bring to completion all of the good work that he has begun in us, our
Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
