The Reverend Hester Mathes
Senior Associate Rector
For six years as a student at St. Mary’s Episcopal School, Hester attended morning chapel in the sanctuary of Church of the Holy Communion. More than two decades later, she returned to the sanctuary as curate, then associate rector and now senior associate rector.
After graduating from the College of William & Mary, studying music, art and psychology, Hester returned to serve as youth coordinator at Calvary Episcopal. She later taught music from her home studio and then worked as the integrated fine arts teacher at St. George’s Independent School. She returned to Virginia in 2011 for graduate school at Virginia Theological Seminary. She was ordained as a priest at Holy Communion in January 2015.
Hester’s work at Church of the Holy Communion focuses on outreach and young adult ministries and sharing in sacramental, preaching and teaching responsibilities. Hester and her husband, Andy, have two children: Neeley and Zander. As a family, they love to be outdoors as much as possible and enjoy biking, hiking, camping and exploring nature.
