FEEDING THE HUNGRY IN MEMPHIS:

Did you know that 150-180 individual meals are sent out from Church of the Holy Communion each week to the hungry in Memphis? Our Gleaning and Food Recovery ministry works with various organizations in Memphis to provide healthy food to the hungry. Those distributing our meals include Emmanuel Center, Hope House, Lisieux Community Drop-In Center, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, St. George’s Memphis campus and the 901 Refrigerator Project. In addition to the individual meals, the ministry provides a hot meal each week for fifty-sixty clients served by First Congregational Church, and meals for Room in the Inn, as needed.

WHERE THE FOOD COMES FROM:

Holy Communion partners with Rhodes College students to recover food from their cafeteria each week during the academic year; we receive recovered bread from La Baguette, and as available, recovered produce from the Agricenter Farmers Market. Occasionally, restaurants also send recovered food. After our annual parish meeting, we recovered excess BBQ and packaged forty meals.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP THIS FOOD MINISTRY:

We are blessed to receive a continuing – and growing – quantity of quality food each week that we then turn into healthy meals for the hungry. We need more hands to prepare the meals!

We need you, your friends and your neighbors to join one of our groups. In addition to parishioners, we have volunteers from St. George’s Episcopal Church, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, and individuals from our diocese and other faith denominations. Work groups meet on Sunday afternoon, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Find a time and group that works best for you and help provide a healthy meal for a hungry person.
